"A Hidden Retreat on the Second Floor Overlooking the Uchigura"

Facing the Sea of Japan, Aikawa experiences strong winds and snowfall in winter. The main building, "Shimizugama," is located close to the sea and features an "Uchigura" (an inner storehouse) built within the structure to protect it from the elements. This room is accessed through the Uchigura, which was originally part of the workspace for producing the traditional Sado pottery, "Mumyoi-yaki." Climbing the stairs and stepping out of the Uchigura, you arrive at the guestroom.

Stepping out of the Uchigura and climbing the stairs, you enter the guestroom. This space was originally a storage area, once filled with ceramics and Mumyoi-yaki pieces baked on-site. A rare architectural design, this room resembles an attic with a direct view of the Uchigura.

Ceiling Crafted in "Yoroi-bari" Style and a Cozy Loft-Like Sleeping Area

The spacious interior is divided into two distinct areas. One features a high ceiling, and the other a loft-like sleeping space with a low ceiling. The high ceiling area at the entrance is built using the "Yoroi-bari" technique, a traditional method where wooden planks are layered like armor, commonly used for exterior walls of wooden houses in rainy regions. This prevents wind from entering and ensures that rainwater flows downward. In this room, a skilled local craftsman applied this technique to the ceiling, creating a unique and textured aesthetic. Before you sleep, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship overhead.

The main sleeping area is located at the back, one step up from the living space. With its lower ceiling, it offers a cozy and calming atmosphere. The windows feature "Yoshi-shōji" (reed paper sliding doors) that were originally stored in this house’s Uchigura. These provide privacy while allowing soft sunlight and cool breezes to pass through, creating a nostalgic, secluded ambiance.

The bathroom is well-equipped with an overhead shower, and the spacious bath, with its hinoki (Japanese cypress) walls, fills the room with a soothing aroma—perfect for unwinding after your travels.

Start Your Morning with a Complimentary Breakfast

A complimentary breakfast is included in your stay. It is provided by a local delicatessen in the Tasha district of Sado. The meal consists of rice balls, side dishes, and miso soup—simple yet reminiscent of everyday life on Sado. The rice used is locally grown Koshihikari, and other ingredients are sourced from Sado or made in-house.

Guests can choose to have breakfast in their room or at "Kyomachi Chaya," our dedicated breakfast venue. While a short walk from the rooms, the breathtaking view from the venue is well worth the trip.
