Hotel Kumoi is a small, intimate inn, born from the renovation of a traditional hot spring ryokan that has long stood in Sounkyo.
As a result, touches of its original charm remain throughout the building, creating a space where guests can feel both the freshness of modern comfort and the warmth of nostalgia.

Our guest rooms retain the charm of days gone by, and all are traditional Japanese-style rooms.

Though modest in size, these cozy rooms are ideal for those seeking a quiet stay, away from the bustle of travel, surrounded by nature.

We may not offer the elaborate hospitality, open-air baths, or lavish meals of a grand ryokan.
But rather than a typical taste of Hokkaido, we focus on the unique atmosphere of Sounkyo itself, offering a stay that can only be experienced in this special place.

At our dining venue, Kumoi Rindou, we serve gentle, creative Japanese cuisine made with local ingredients.

The History of Sounkyo Onsen

Sounkyo Onsen, one of Hokkaido’s five major hot spring resorts.

This land, once called “Sounbetsu” in the Ainu language, meaning “river with many waterfalls,” was named Sounkyo by the celebrated Meiji-era poet Keigetsu Ōmachi.

The origins of Sounkyo Onsen date back to the discoveries of its hot springs by early explorers of the Daisetsuzan Mountains, including Ichitaro Matsuda, a foot soldier from the late Edo-period Ishikari administration, and Takeshiro Matsuura.

In earlier times, the area was known as Shioya Onsen, and local Hokkaido farmwomen would visit during winter to rest and rejuvenate.
At Hotel Kumoi, you can enjoy these rich sulfurous waters in a free-flowing hot spring directly from the source.

Hotel Kumoi’s “Skin-Enhancing Bath”

The waters of Sounkyo Onsen are clear and colorless, with a faint scent of sulfur, and are classified as a simple sulfur spring.
Mildly alkaline and gentle on the skin, these waters are said to be beneficial for skin conditions, neuralgia, cuts, diabetes, and high blood pressure, making them safe and soothing for both elderly guests and young children.

Sounkyo Onsen has more than 60 sources, each with subtle differences in scent and color.
The hot spring at Hotel Kumoi is especially rich in natural moisturizing elements, including metasilicic acid.

Metasilicic acid is a natural beauty component found in some hot springs, also included in moisturizing lotions and bath additives for supple skin.
A spring containing more than 100 mg of metasilicic acid per kilogram is considered beneficial for the skin, and the waters at Hotel Kumoi are particularly rich, containing 122 mg.
